To cut a really long, heartbreaking story short, in September, 2009 we were utterly devastated when the Parvo virus attacked our July & August Litters. Out of 21 beautiful, robust & playful puppies, we lost 17 of our puppies when they were ages 7 & 9 weeks old, despite all the vet's intensive care & the 24 hour/day care I myself gave. I cannot describe the devastation that I felt then & still feel now.
Vets have described this outbreak as an extremely deadly 'outbreak' of Parvo, and from talking to many other dog breeders & owners Australia wide, it isn't just us who has been devastated by this 'outbreak' even though our dogs/puppies are vaccinated against Parvo.........a scary scenario for any dog lover!!
The only positive thing that came out of all this, was the discovery of a product sold in America called Parvaid, which made huge claims about using it for the successful treatment of Parvo. Though I had immediately ordered it (though skeptical as to whether it worked) it arrived too late for my poor babies in September.
This current litter of 6 puppies were born just 3 days after my last puppy died from Parvo, so as you could imagine, I wasn't feeling too positive about these puppies surviving. But they did & thrived until they were 5 weeks old, but then they contracted Parvo (even though every effort was made to keep them isolated from the virus through using VirkonS, complete isolation & sterilisation) and I thought that I was going to have a repeat of my September nightmare.
But, thankfully, Parvaid worked just as it claimed on their website and I had 100% survival rate - just using the Parvaid protocol. Again, I cannot describe what I felt, but this time it was an utter relief of knowing that there was a successful treatment for this devastatingly deadly virus.
These babies are all now in their new forever homes......have fun everyone!! |
